Is a hostel the same as a hotel?
Not exactly. In a hotel, you usually book a room. In a hostel, you usually book a bed in a shared or private room. At Surf Hostel Biarritz, the experience is also more social and relaxed, with breakfast, surf and shared spaces as part of the stay.
I am not a surfer. Can I still book a bed at Surf Hostel Biarritz?
Yes, of course. Many guests come for the atmosphere, the location in Biarritz and the hostel experience, even if they have never surfed before.
Are Surf Hostel Biarritz and Utopy Hostel the same ?
No. They are two different hostels, with different owners, different offers and different prices.
Can I book a whole room at Surf Hostel Biarritz?
Yes. On our website, bookings are normally made bed by bed. If you want the whole room for yourself, you need to book all the beds in that room, unless you choose a room that is already offered as a private room.
Why do the rooms have beach names?
Because Biarritz is deeply connected to the ocean. Our rooms are inspired by the beaches of Biarritz, which reflects the local surf spirit of Surf Hostel Biarritz.
Since when has Surf Hostel Biarritz existed?
Surf Hostel Biarritz has existed since 2007, when the original family business started welcoming travellers in Biarritz.
Did the Surf Hostel logo change?
Yes. The logo was updated in 2026.
This hostel looks different from most hostels. Why?
Surf Hostel Biarritz is part of a very old and historic building in Biarritz, which gives it a different atmosphere from a more standard hostel.
How old is the house?
The house was built in 1580.
Are towels included in the price?
Yes. Every booked bed includes a fresh bath towel for your stay, as well as clean sheets prepared for your arrival.

What type of accommodation can I book at Surf Hostel Biarritz?
You can book a bed in a shared dormitory or a private room, depending on availability and the type of stay you are looking for.
Is breakfast included?
Yes. Breakfast is included in the stay.
How can I pay?
We accept bank cards, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, bank transfers and cash payments in euros.
Can I pay online?
Yes. Online payment is possible depending on the booking method and the platform used.
Is it cheaper to book on Booking.com or on surfhostelbiarritz.com?
Most of the time, booking directly on surfhostelbiarritz.com is the best option to access our most direct rates and the clearest information about your stay, breakfast, surfboard use and hostel services.
Is it cheaper to book on Hostelworld.com or on surfhostelbiarritz.com?
In general, booking directly on surfhostelbiarritz.com is the best way to access our direct rates and full information about the hostel and your stay.
I booked on Hostelworld.com. Why do I still have to pay at the hostel?
Some booking platforms only charge a deposit or service fee when the reservation is made. The remaining balance is then paid directly to the hostel according to the booking conditions.
I cannot book all the nights in the same bed. Why?
Depending on availability and existing reservations, the same bed may not always be available for your full stay. In that case, the team will try to organise the simplest solution for your stay.
Can I reserve a surfboard?
There is no need to reserve a surfboard in advance. Surfboards are available for in-house guests, and you can choose or change your board depending on your level, the availability and the conditions of the day.
Can I reserve a bike?
No. Bikes cannot be reserved in advance. Bike rentals are arranged directly at reception, according to availability on the day.
I want to change my booking. How can I do that?
Contact us as soon as possible with your booking details and the changes you need. We will check availability and confirm what is possible.
Can I cancel my booking?
Bookings can be cancelled up to 5 days before arrival. In all cases, 15% of the total amount is retained to cover bank charges.
I have a booking but I got sick. Can I get my money back?
The standard cancellation conditions apply, even in case of illness: cancellation is generally possible up to 5 days before arrival, and 15% of the total amount is retained in all cases for bank charges.
Are pets accepted?
No. Pets are not accepted in the hostel.
Is the hostel quiet at night?
Yes. For everyone’s comfort, guests are asked to keep the hostel quiet in the evening and during the night.
Group bookings
From how many people can I make a group booking request?
Group booking requests are possible from 6 people.
Up to how many people can you accommodate?
The hostel can consider group requests of up to 20 people depending on the dates, room configuration and current availability.
During which periods are groups accepted?
Group stays are generally welcomed from March to October, except July and August, as we prefer to keep those dates for smaller groups and solo travellers.
Is there a minimum stay for groups?
Yes. A minimum stay of 2 nights applies to group requests.
What is the minimum age accepted in the hostel?
Guests staying without their parents must be at least 18 years old. Minors can stay only when accompanied by a parent during the whole stay.
I am 17 years old. Can my parents reserve for me?
No. A minor cannot stay alone at Surf Hostel Biarritz, even with parental authorisation. Minors are accepted only when staying with their parents during the whole stay.
Do groups have to be adults only?
Yes. Group bookings currently apply to adult groups only.
If we book as a group, can we all stay in the same room?
We always do our best to keep group members together, but it depends on availability and room configuration.
Can private rooms and dorms be mixed within the same group booking?
Yes. This is possible depending on availability and the group’s needs.
Can surf lessons be organised for the group?
Yes. If the group wants to surf during the stay, please mention it from the first request so the most suitable organisation can be prepared.
Do you have boys and girls separated?
No. Our dormitories are mixed.
Do I have to share the room?
It depends on the room you select. We provide shared dormitories, private room options and rooms that can be privatised by booking all beds.
Is my bed freshly made every day?
Beds are prepared fresh for your arrival. During your stay, daily full bed changes are not included.
Can I come with my sleeping bag?
You can bring your sleeping bag if you wish, but beds are already prepared with sheets.
In case I prefer another bed, can I simply change beds?
No. Each guest must stay in the bed assigned to them for the night. Any bed change without prior approval from reception may result in an extra night being charged.
Does every bed include towels and bedsheets?
Yes. Each booked bed includes clean sheets and a bath towel.
I want to change my bath towel, sheets or pillow. Can I?
Yes, but please inform reception beforehand. Any change made without informing reception may be charged at 10 €.
Is there a curtain on my bed?
It depends on the room and bed type. The room photos show the exact bed layout before booking.
How many beds are available?
Availability depends on the dates of your stay. Our website shows live availability.
Do you provide lockers?
Yes. Every room has one locker provided per bed.
Where can I leave my stuff?
You can keep your belongings in your room and store your valuables in the locker provided for each bed.
Can I have a key for my room?
For private rooms, it is possible to have a key. Dormitories remain open, but you can lock your valuables in a locker.
Is the parking free?
Yes, but parking spaces are limited.
Do you have wifi?
Yes. We have a good wifi connection in the hostel.
How fast is the wifi?
Our internet is on optical fibre, which offers a fast and stable connection for daily use.
Is my stuff safe?
We do our best to provide a safe and relaxed environment. For valuables, we recommend using the locker provided in your room.
I stay in another place. Can I rent your bikes or surfboards?
No. We can only provide surfboards and bikes to our own guests.
I do the Camino and leave very early. How does it work?
Please let us know the day before, so we can finalise any rental contracts or payments before your early departure.
I work on my computer. Is there a quiet space where I can focus ?
Yes. We have a small work area with electrical outlets and lights. If you need absolute silence or have a meeting.
Is it possible to do a late check-in?
Yes. In case of late arrival, we can organise a self check-in and leave your private arrival information at the entrance of Hostel Principal .
I do not speak French very well. Can I speak another language with you?
Of course. We all speak English and some of us also speak Spanish and German. We will always be able to communicate.
Can I check in earlier?
If the room or bed is ready earlier, we will always do our best, but early check-in depends on availability and the cleaning schedule.
Can I leave my luggage and pick it up later?
On check-out day, the bed or room must be completely free by 10:00. Luggage storage is possible during reception opening hours, depending on the space available that day.
Can I book a long stay?
Longer stays may be possible depending on the season, availability and the type of accommodation.
Can I always sit at the same place for breakfast?
If you are the first person at the table, you can choose your favourite place.
I am vegan. Are there options for me?
Our breakfast is vegetarian, with vegan options such as fruit, cereals and some breads. You can also bring your own products to complete it if needed.
I want to surf early. Can I have something to eat after 10:00?
Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9:30. After that time, the kitchen remains available for guests, but each guest organises their own food.
I do not eat bread. What else can I eat?
We have fruits and different types of cereals. However, we cannot properly cater for a strict gluten-free diet.
Can I have a very early breakfast?
We can leave some fruit and cereals for you, but you need to ask the day before.
I would like to cook during my stay. Is the kitchen available?
Yes. You can use the kitchen every day from 10:00 to 22:00, we ask the guests to leave the place as it was .
I love sharing with others. Can I cook for everybody?
Yes. The simplest way is to join the guest WhatsApp group and ask who would like to participate in the meal.
I have never surfed before. What should I do?
The ocean is a natural environment and conditions can change quickly. For beginners, it is safer to start with a surf lesson. Before entering the water, always check the tides, currents, swell, weather, local rules, swimming areas and surf areas.
Is a surfboard included?
Yes. A surfboard is included in the price of the bed. You can choose from our selection depending on your level, the availability and the conditions of the day.
What kind of surfboards do you have?
We have several types of boards available for in-house guests: shortboards, mid-length boards, soft-tops, hard-tops and longboards.
Is surfing dangerous?
Like any activity in the ocean, surfing requires care and respect for the conditions. If you are a beginner, start with small waves, stay in the right area and take a lesson if needed.
Do you provide wetsuits?
Yes. You can rent a wetsuit with us. Long wetsuits cost 10 €/day and short wetsuits cost 5 €/day, depending on availability.
What types of wetsuits do you have?
We have long and short wetsuits in different sizes and for different temperatures, depending on availability.
Do you also have surfboards for good surfers?
Yes. We have several shortboards and longboards. We also rent two WYVE boards, one fish and one evolutive 7’, for 25 €/day.
Which beach is the best for beginners?
Grande Plage is often a good option for beginners, depending on the conditions of the day. It is also one of the most well-known and accessible beaches in Biarritz.
Which beach is closest to the hostel?
The ocean is about 20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by bike from Surf Hostel Biarritz. Several beaches are easy to reach. Côte des Basques is not accessible at high tide, and Port Vieux is a swimming beach, not a surf spot.
Which beach is the best for swimming?
Port Vieux is usually the best option for swimming in Biarritz. It is a swimming beach rather than a surf spot, but you should always respect the signs and lifeguard instructions.
Where can I go if I want to take a surf lesson?
We work with our partner surf school, Private Surf School Biarritz, run by Axel Llerga. Surf lessons can be organised depending on availability and surf conditions.
I come with my own surfboard. Is there space to store it?
No. We do not have a dedicated storage area for personal surfboards. For comfort and safety, we recommend not bringing your own board if you need to store it at the hostel.
How long can I use the surfboard on my check-out day?
All equipment must be returned by 10:00. If you wish to keep using a board for the rest of the day and we have enough availability, it can be rented for an additional fee.
How long can I use the bike for?
Bikes are usually rented for full days. You can keep the bike for several days depending on availability and the rental period agreed at reception.
How much does it cost to rent a bike?
Bike rental costs 15 € for the first day, then 10 € for each additional day. For example: 25 € for two days, 35 € for three days, and so on.
Do you have electric bikes?
No. Our bike rentals are standard bikes, not electric bikes.
If I come with my own bike, is there a place to store it?
Yes. There is a bike area outside in front of the hostel, with a small bike parking space next to the one used for our rental bikes.
Do you have locks, lights or helmets for the bike?
Every bike comes with a lock. If you wish to use a helmet or lights, we can lend them to you.
Can I go far by bike from the hostel?
Yes, as long as it fits the duration of your rental and your own level. The bike remains your responsibility during the rental period.
What can I do when it rains?
Even when it rains, there are good options between Biarritz and Bayonne: museums, cafés, indoor activities and visits.
When I arrive, I would like to connect with the others. How can I do that?
You can scan the QR code in the hostel to join the guest WhatsApp group. Guests can share where they are, what they are doing and plans for the day.
I would like to discover Biarritz. Where should I go?
Biarritz offers beaches, coastal walks, local food spots, cafés, surf spots and viewpoints. The centre, the coastline and the beach areas are the main places to explore.
How far is the beach?
The ocean is about 20 minutes on foot from the hostel and about 5 minutes by bike.
Is it possible to go out in Biarritz in the evening?
Yes. Biarritz has many bars, restaurants and lively places in the evening, especially in the city centre and near the beach.
Can I come with my friends?
Yes. You can book several beds together or choose the room option that best fits your group, depending on availability.
How can I get to the train station?
Biarritz train station is about 25 minutes on foot from the hostel. You can also reach it by local bus, taxi or ride-hailing service.
How can I get to the airport?
Biarritz airport is about 30 minutes on foot from the hostel. You can also reach it by local bus, taxi or ride-hailing service.
How far is the city centre?
Biarritz city centre is about 15 minutes on foot from the hostel.
I am travelling in my van. Can I sleep in the parking lot and take a shower in the hostel?
No. To preserve comfort, safety and organisation on site, access to the hostel is reserved for guests with a booking.
Can I bring my bike?
Yes. There is a bike area outside in front of the hostel.
Can I book the whole hostel?
Depending on the season, dates and availability, this may be possible. Whole-hostel requests are handled as group requests.
Is the hostel open all year round?
No, the hostel is not open all year round. Surf Hostel Biarritz usually operates seasonally, mainly from March to October.
